2019 CARAS project grant recipient Jake Beyer takes a break from filming on location in Iceland

The Temple University Office of the Provost and the Deans of Temple University’s Schools and Colleges are pleased to provide a funding opportunity to encourage and support undergraduate students engaged in scholarly, creative, and research projects that contribute to advancing their field of study.

The Creative Arts, Research And Scholarship (CARAS) Program makes two types of grants: Research/Creative Project Grants and Travel Grants.

Research/Creative Project Grants provide undergraduate students grants of up to $4,000 in support of scholarly, research or creative arts projects undertaken with the supervision of a full-time Temple faculty mentor. An expectation of the CARAS Project Grant is that recipients will produce a final deliverable appropriate for their field of study (paper, exhibit, film, etc.) that advances their academic and professional development. Travel costs to present research at conferences are not covered by this grant and students need to submit a separate Travel Grant application.

Detailed CARAS Project Grant Application Eligibility and Guidelines

Project Grant applications are now OPEN with a deadline of March 15th. Please read through the Research/Creative Project Grant accordion below to find the application link.

Travel Grants provide funding support for undergraduate travel to conferences to present original research or creative work. The maximum Travel Grant award is $1,000. Requests may be modified based on an assessment of the budget proposal and/or the availability of resources.

CARAS grants are competitive and limited to approximately 50 awards per year (20 Project Grants and 30 Travel Grants).

One half of the CARAS grant is provided by the Office of the Provost and a matching half is provided by the student’s School or College. The program is administered by Undergraduate Studies.

Award Disbursement Method and Details

The CARAS Project Grant budget is split into three categories: Supplies/Materials, Travel, and Student Stipend. Students propose an amount in each of these categories at the time of application based on what is necessary to complete their project. If approved for the grant, the award represents the sum total of all three budget categories, with a maximum award amount of $4000. When paying out the award, the Supplies/Materials and Travel budget are treated separately from the Student Stipend.

The Student Stipend is paid out in increments over the duration of the project based on progress reports submitted by the student’s faculty mentor. The final stipend payment is only made upon completion of the grant and submission of all deliverables. The Supplies/Materials and Travel budget are paid out as reimbursements upon completion of the project and submission of necessary receipts.

All CARAS Project Grant payments made to students are applied as a scholarship to the student’s Bursar billing account and will be processed as a refund. Award payments during the summer will be posted to the prior spring term (or a summer term if you are enrolled in a summer course).  Award recipients must comply with the following rules and stipulations shown below:

  • To be eligible to receive the award, your Bursar account must be current ($0 balance). Any outstanding balance will be paid, or partially paid, by the award. This includes your fall and/or spring tuition bill.
  • Payments are received via a refund from your Bursar account. Students with direct deposit setup on their Bursar account will receive stipends to the currently listed bank account. Students can set up direct deposit via TUpay on the Student Tools Tab of the TUportal.
  • In order to receive the full award amount as a refund, you must have unmet Temple University financial aid need equal to or exceeding the award amount. If you have received loans and/or financial aid up to the limit of the full cost of attendance during the 2024-2025 academic year at Temple University, your stipend will lower the loan amount instead of being paid out as a refund. Please contact or visit Student Financial Services to speak to a representative about your specific account if you are not sure. If you find when speaking to them that there is any issue with you receiving this award, please contact Anisha Bhat at  immediately.
